Humanity now has access to untold alien worlds, and the ability to decipher all that data while on the ground has become an essential skillset.
Surveying is a tier 1 Science skill in Starfield with 4 ranks. It is available from the start. Ranks 2 through 4 each need a challenge completed before they can be bought.
It is a starting skill of 4 backgrounds.

Adds another level of zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 30 meters.
Rank 3
Surveying
Adds another level of zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 40 meters.
Rank 4
Surveying
Adds another level of zoom to the hand scanner, and scan distance is increased to 50 meters.
Challenges
Rank 1: Use the hand scanner to scan 10 unique resources, flora, or fauna.
Rank 2: Use the hand scanner to scan 25 unique resources, flora, or fauna.
Rank 3: Use the hand scanner to scan 50 unique resources, flora, or fauna.
