While anyone can use a ship's scanner, it takes a specially trained operator to detect hard-to-find planetary resources, or uncover the details of nearby ships.

Scanning is a tier 2 Science skill in Starfield with 4 ranks. Its tier unlocks after 4 skill points are spent on the lower Science tiers. Ranks 2 through 4 each need a challenge completed before they can be bought.

Rank 4
Scanning

You can detect unique inorganic resources on planet and moon surfaces, and gain a complete list of cargo on ships in space.

Challenges

Rank 1: Scan 5 planets or moons.
Rank 2: Scan 15 planets or moons.
Rank 3: Scan 30 planets or moons.
